ShareLouisville’s Health Problems discussed in New York Post
By · CommentsJune 13, 2011, The New York Times published an article stating, “More than 6 out of 10 people in metro Louisville are still considered seriously overweight.” Public officials are making headway now and planning for 10 years down the road. The article later quoted former Mayor Jerry Abramson, “For businesses, a healthy work force is more productive and less costly, so it becomes a competitiveness issue.”
The fact remains that we spend more of our waking, fully conscious hours at work and around our coworkers. Employers have more ability to influence healthy choices than do city officials. Creating a “work culture of wellness” spills over into a community culture of wellness.
As with most problems, the first step to solving the problem is identifying and accepting that a problem exists. I can’t tell you how many times we do a health fair, take someone’s blood pressure and hear them say “I never knew I had high blood pressure.” The person leaves the health fair and gets on medications to regulate their blood pressure. That’s just the start, to really reduce their risk; some lifestyle changes must be addressed. These lifestyle changes include better eating habits and increasing physical activity.
The blood pressure is just part of a bigger metabolic problem known as Syndrome X or the Deadly Quartet.
The four components of Syndrome X are:
Central obesity
High blood sugar
High cholesterol
High blood pressure
A patient is diagnosed with Syndrome X when two or more of these problems are present. Syndrome X is very dangerous and costly, changing the risk factors means affecting the patient’s weight and creating a culture of wellness. The good news, small changes in the workplace can have a huge impact on a person’s health.

ShareThe Presidential Wellness Initiative
By · CommentsSo 2010 is coming to a close, which for most people, means it’s time to start thinking about a New Year’s resolution. These normally involve some sort of get-in-shape, weight loss plan, and while it’s important to workout and stay healthy, taking steps to improve your health should go beyond a morning jog and a set of crunches.
That’s where the Healthy People 2010 Initiative can help. It’s an initiative that dictates wellness programs to be in all schools and government offices, and encourages corporations to voluntarily follow its protocols. Healthy People 2010 requires doctors to educate employees on wellness programs and lifestyle changes, with a focus on stress, better nutrition, weight loss, and exercise. Right now, though, there is a shortage of doctors to deliver these programs, so many companies are turning to Louisville Health Check to get their wellness program started.
Louisville Health Check is an organization that provides corporate health fairs, screenings, and health education workshops to businesses in eastern Jefferson County. They come to your office, offering no-or-low cost preventative screenings and services to employees for things like blood pressure, carpal tunnel, ergonomic posture, body fat analysis, cholesterol, and blood glucose.
Their health education workshops are a great way to provide a real benefit to employees, help detect potential problems, and give them a better grasp on their own personal health.
While crunches are good for your physique, keeping your inner health in check is also important to ward off silent killers and help you achieve and maintain an overall healthful lifestyle.

So we get stressed because we wanted to let them have the perfect Christmas, the perfect gift and it can all be done without having to fight traffic, with all of these other things that you want to do, right?

One thing that causes me the most stress in my life is trying to manage and beat things that I can’t manage or beat! That’s like managing time. Can you actually manage time? It moves with or without you! You can try and manage yourself within the time, but try and manage and budget other people within that time is a lot harder, isn’t it? Try and manage your kid’s schedules, getting everybody where they need to be when they need to be there. It causes stress.
So let’s talk about some fun ways to beat stress! First of all, let’s talk about the different types of stress! What types of stress are there? Let’s talk about exactly what kinds of stress during the holidays, some of the main causes—it might be in-laws that causes stress?
